Anat & Josh | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

July 27, 2010

Weddings are, in a big way, about ceremony and tradition, traditions that have been around for a long time and that are shared by so many other couples and families. It makes me SO happy then when I see a couple really set out to take the traditions and rites that are at the foundation of their wedding day and really embrace them, claim them, mold them and make them their own. It’s powerful to watch traditions that are so time honored lived out in genuinely present and personal way. This is what Anat and Josh set out to do in their wedding, and they did it so elegantly, so almost effortlessly it took my breath away.

I could tell from the moment I first met these guys that they knew, they really KNEW who they were as a couple. When they decided they wanted to shoot part of their engagement session in an Olympic-sized pool (Yes! In the water!!) because Josh was a competitive swimmer, I knew their wedding was going to be a beautiful celebration of who they are. anatjosh2web1 Anat & Josh | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

They share so much tenderness and love.

anat17web1 Anat & Josh | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

That tenderness and love made its way to every little detail of their day. Josh and Anat took their traditional Jewish wedding and filled the entire day with gorgeous details and really personal touches. Both their wedding and reception were held at the beautiful Rabbit Room at the Lower Mill in Honeoye Falls, and every last detail from Anat’s dress to the desserts was gentle and sophisticated, natural and warm, and complimented the atmosphere of love and laughter that these two share with their family and friends. Even the centerpieces were a touch from home, as Arena’s Florist worked with Anat’s own personal collection of vintage glass bottles.

But while Anat and Josh’s wedding was a stunning expression of their love and their relationship, the day was not just about them either. They were surrounded by a very warm and loving crowd of friends and family, and you could tell that their wedding was also a beautiful celebration of the people in their lives who are so close and dear to them.

There was so much warmth and affection that radiated from these families, and myself and Brandon Vick, who I had the pleasure of having as a second shooter, were touched. Thank you, Anat and Josh, for making me a part of your beautiful day!

Shannon and Kieran at Manhattan Square Park: Before and After | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

June 24, 2010

Every single time I blog…I try to show you something that I think is great — images (of COURSE!)…stories…things we like or are currently obsessed with…cool people we meet…sharing is AMAZING.  I learned everything I know from someone else — so — it seems natural to me to share things with you that might be interesting…

One of the things we offer to our brides and grooms are what we’ve dubbed “Tammified” Images.  I think one of the things I’m REALLY good at is working in my digital darkroom (aka Photoshop ::grin::).  When I am shooting — sometimes I see an image as something it’s obviously NOT when I take it.  I know it’s going to be fun to work on later.  I start with a small seed of an idea — and then once I have it in front of me — then I let the image TELL me what it wants.  I know that sounds really weird (as usual to those who really know me!)  but there’s really no other way to describe it.  There’s no one way or one thing I do to every single image…because each one that is “Tammified” is it’s own story.

There’s no way to teach you this.  It just evolves.  So I have to show you.

Shannon and Kieran really wanted their photos at Manhattan Square Park – all cement…steps…angles…and bright hot (did I say hot?  I mean HOT.  90+ degrees) sunny weather.

It was HOT.  And sun was bouncing everywhere.

So this is the shot I took — STRAIGHT out of the camera.  Not too interesting, right?

shannon kieran before tammified

Here’s the final image.  Tammified.  It’s what I bring to my work…to my clients…and to myself.   And now…to you.  ;)   Shannon and Kieran — this was an AMAZING idea and you both ROCKED it!!  xoxo

Picture Perfect Package | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

June 22, 2010

Everyone likes to open presents. I love to see the delight and wonder in people’s eyes as they wrestle with ribbons and pull off paper and ooooo and awwwww over what’s inside. And……I know my brides are going to be opening their fair share of gifts. The martini glasses and quesadilla makers, blenders and Le Creusets.  There is so much wonder and excitement when couples first see their wedding images, when they can first relive their incredible day without all the hustle and bustle and nerves of the wedding day.  So we thought, why not couple the wonder of opening an amazing gift with the wonder of receiving and seeing your wedding images??!!! Totally makes sense, right?! Right. So…a fabulous new husband and wife just received another wedding gift…

These Days Are Very Engaging | Rochester NY Engagement Photographer

June 4, 2010

So here’s the thing about engagement sessions. They are SO. MUCH. FUN. I love how laid back they are. There is so much raw emotion at weddings. So much love, so much tears. But at engagement sessions you’ve got two people, completely in love, and it’s just them in their normal clothes and everyday habitats. There’s no crowd, no gowns, no wedding party, no pressure. Just a boy and a girl (and a crazy redhead yelling directions). And it’s all about THEM. About the love they share and what makes them such a unique and incredible couple. I can’t even tell you how much fun this is for me to watch!!!!!! And how much we LAUGH!!! I’ve literally come home from engagement shoots with my face sore from laughing so much. It really is fantastic to see couples open up and be their crazy, playful selves.

All that said, I’ve had a MAD number of engagement shoots lately. What an amazing way to start off the summer!!! I am PSYCHED beyond belief to shoot every one of these weddings.  I am overwhelmed by how each of my couples “get” me and how I work..which is the MOST important thing in getting great photographs.

Sometimes crazy fun engagement shoots take a little extra maneuvering, and my couples really step up to the plate. Literally! Valerie had to do some serious pre-planning to get us into Frontier Field so she and Keith could incorporate their love of baseball into their engagement images. But what a great experience that was!!! And Jessica and Clark impressively managed to get their ENORMOUS (and gorgeous!) dog all the way up to my forth floor studio without event! Talk about hard core…

egagebb These Days Are Very Engaging | Rochester NY Engagement Photographer

And Stephanie and Micah were right there when I started yelling  “AH! There! Light! Underpass! Run! Now! Go!”

I love my couples and I am SO excited for this summer.

“All You Need Is Love” Adam and Stephanie – Irondequoit Country Club | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

June 2, 2010

I love my job. LOVE. And I feel so fortunate to be able to be right there for some of the most amazing moments of people’s lives. To be able to capture these incredible and beautiful celebrations of love and affection.  There are times I come home from a wedding just bursting to talk about everything and then I sit in front of the computer and…and then there is just SO much to say, it’s hard to get down. Adam and Stephanie’s wedding was one of those weddings. I still don’t even know where to begin.  But first let me give a shout out to James Bass who helped me so much as my second.  There is nothing better…I mean NOTHING better than a GREAT second.  James got some AMAZING images — and I can’t wait to second shoot for him in August!  Woot!

There was so much love at this wedding. Both bride and groom come from big, crazy, tightly-knit families. But what was really amazing to see was how Stephanie and Adam’s love for each other brought their individual sides of the family together. The tender closeness of the two families and the obvious love that they have for Adam and Stephanie took my breath away.  And made me cry.  Multiple times.

As you can see, I wasn’t the only one.

As if the ceremony at Blessed Sacrament wasn’t emotional enough, Adam’s mom surprised him during the reception by having his best friend play a song live for the mother-and-son dance. Adam’s BF gave an INCREDIBLE speech written by Adam’s mom, picked up his guitar and started to sing the Beatle’s “All You Need Is Love.”  Adam, crying, held his mom close, also crying, while they danced. And then they reached out and brought Stephanie into the the dance, and then her parents and then the rest of their families and then the entire party was on the dance floor.  So powerful and so beautiful.  Um…yeah. It’s kind of hard to shoot when you’re bawling your eyes out. I’m tearing up again just thinking about it.

All of that love also makes for so much laughter, and let me tell you, this was a hilarious bunch.

I’ve known from the start that Adam and Stephanie were crazy funny, laid back and ready for anything. When they insisted on bringing my couch to the wedding, how could I refuse?! I told them, you can carry it, we can shoot it, so my (apparently very hardy!) Victorian couch followed us around all afternoon in it’s own personal van! And…velvet couch + the grounds of Irondequoit Country Club = OMG.

The dancing and jokes and laughter, the GORGEOUS reception, the warmth and celebration that just filled the entire day…Adam and Stephanie, you are incredibly lucky. Thank you so SO so much for letting me share this day, and your family’s tremendous love, with you.

Yeah. I really do love my job.

Two Couples…One Gorgeous Day in Manhattan | New York City Wedding Photographer

May 26, 2010

I love – just LOVE – shooting engagement sessions in Manhattan. The color. The texture. The action. It’s always an adventure.

The great thing is, it just so happens that this year I have A LOT of couples from New York. Some are getting married in the NYC/Long Island area. Some who live down there now are getting married in Rochester. And one couple is holding their wedding in an AWESOME old bank in downtown Albany!

Lots of NY couples means…lots of NY engagement shoots! WOOT WOOT!!!  It also means some very strategic planning and a good deal of heated negotiation with the weather man.  All of that has paid off, though, ’cause this last trip down was SUCH a success!  Allison and Gregg and Leslie and Brad were totally fantastic and, let me tell you, between the lot of us we have some ROCKIN’ scheduling skills. What better way to spend a gorgeous spring day than marathon-shooting two adorable, fabulous couples in Manhattan?!?!

NYCEngagements

There really isn’t any. I mean seriously. SO much fun!!!! Allison and Gregg, Leslie and Brad, you made my day.

Rochester NY Wedding Photographer | Mary and Ryan and Dogs Oh My!

April 23, 2010

You may remember Mary and her awesome dog and horse shoot from last summer… I remember us discussing how she was dating this great guy…how happy she was…and it was obvious – -she absolutely glowed when his name came up!

Fast forward to the fall when I get an AMAZING call from Mary — that she and Ryan were engaged!  They are getting married this fall — and as it should be — they BOTH glow when they are together.  Ryan loves animals and nature as much as Mary does — I can’t wait to see what crazy details they come up with for their wedding day.

As the day approached for their engagement shoot — I was watching the weather and realized that the day we were going to shoot was supposed to be AWFUL — so I shot a quick email and basically BEGGED them to shoot with me TODAY as it was sunny and pretty and I really really wanted a nice day for them…needless to say — they said yes, and although it was CRAZY cold out — we still managed to have fun with their cool dogs and great light.

I can’t believe I got all four of them in the same frame…sitting at the same time!

The light!  The light!

This field was awesome.  I don’t know if Mary and Ryan LOVED being all up in the brush — but it LOOKED cool.  And that is what is important in photographs, eh?

mary ryan1

I’m not afraid to tell you this:  I took this one only for Mary.  ;)

Published Spring 2010 American Photo and Well Wed Magazines! | Rochester NY Photographer

April 1, 2010

I can’t believe how amazing this is.  I have been LUCKY enough to be published in two magazines this Spring — the FANTABULOUS WellWed Magazine — in which Stacy K’s dream of a wedding is featured — OMG so so beautiful! Stacy K and Ozgur’s wedding was at the INCREDIBLE Artisan Works — the perfect fit for this colorful crazy wedding, and I could not have gotten the day captured as wonderfully as I did without the help of Rachael Hadiashar of Merge Weddings — I am so so blessed to be surrounded by such amazing and talented people.  Cake by Deb Stirone at Gourmet GoodiesJason Ripple at Rock Paper Scissors Salon did the crazy cool hair –  Joan Lincoln did makeupHank Parker provided the chairs and tables and linens — and of COURSE Stacy K handled the style, design, decor, floral arrangments and everything else amazing.  WHAT A TEAM PEOPLE!!

Oh.  And if any of my brides didn’t get a copy and want one…I might have a ‘couple’ extra– like…1,000.  ::laughing::  You should have seen the clerk at Wegmans when I went up to the counter and plunked them down.  I was totally disappointed that she didn’t say.a.WORD.  I mean come on!   I was bursting to tell her why I was buying so many!  ::shaking head::

wellwedweb Published Spring 2010 American Photo and Well Wed Magazines! | Rochester NY Photographer

I also had the honor of being interviewed by American Photo Magazine  — Theano Nikitas did an INCREDIBLE job writing an article on the new direction senior photography is taking.  I was STOKED to be included in the mix of talented photographers — and it was incredible seeing my work in a national publication.  Truly jaw dropping omg how is this happening wonderful!  Thank you so much — I am honored and humbled that I might have something interesting to say!
