100 Layer Day: Megan and Asa | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

September 30, 2010

One of the things I love about weddings is how intricate, how complex, how layered each couple’s wedding day is. Behind the order and the tradition and planning and living out of that day there are a thousand other little stories, a hundred stolen winks and inside jokes, two families worth of histories that come together as the bride and groom start to write their own family tale.

So one layer of the day may look like this:

I love this image!!! And it perfectly sums up Megan and Asa – Quirky, colorful and SO. MUCH. FUN!!!

These two so obviously light up in each other’s presence, that anyone who is around them can’t help but smile. There was so much laughter and happiness that day!

Another layer of Megan and Asa’s wedding day looked like this:

Everything that Megan had on or around her while getting ready that morning held a very precious significance and connection to a family story. Megan had her mother’s wedding dress (the one in the wall photo) altered, and was so proud and honored to wear it on her own wedding day.

She wore her grandmother’s garter, saved for her all these years.

And in the room she kept photos of her parents on their wedding day, a card that her mother had given her father, and a bank that Megan made for her father when she was young :

Somebody was obviously thinking ahead. icon wink 100 Layer Day: Megan and Asa | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

Yet another layer of the day looked like this:

Tammified 9 100 Layer Day: Megan and Asa | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

Megan and Asa exude so much adoration for their family and friends and they wanted their day to be as much a gift to those they loved as a celebration of their own love. They surrounded themselves with close friends and family, from the cutest group of flower girls and ring bearers ever…

…to an absolutely rockin’ wedding party.

Their ceremony at Artisan Works was so personal – tender and beautiful and hilarious at the same time – and their reception at Rochester Plaza Hotel was a perfect continuation of the stories, the traditions and the laughter that really made up their day. And this dance, which kind of rolled all of those into one:

Megan and Asa, I can’t wait to see what stories come next! Thank you for making me a part of your day!

Casa Larga Vineyard Wedding: Jessica and Clarke | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

September 17, 2010

Hockey season is right around the corner!!! Which I know because…one of my couples is gearing up for it to start! Clarke plays left wing for the Toronto Maple Leafs. So if you follow hockey (and even if you don’t!)  keep your eyes out for Clarke MacArthur!

Every single thing about Jessica and Clarke’s day, from Jessica’s breath-taking dress, to her shoes…

From their ceremony at Chapel Hill to their beautiful reception at Casa Larga – everything was wrapped in elegance, style and sophistication.

When Jessica and Clarke and I first met, we had tossed around some ideas about something unique to do after the ceremony. They finally decided on a dove release, which was SO much fun to watch, particularly just to see their faces! I had the pleasure of shooting with Kristi Hedberg as my second shooter, who captured this priceless image from release…Clarke’s face just makes this image for me!

LOVE.

But one of the things I loved the most about Jessica and Clarke’s day was that amidst all the hustle and bustle (we had a full day!), amidst the hectic-ness of knowing they were going to move soon, and in between the fun, the laughter and some wicked dance moves…Clarke and his mom ROCKED it out!  OMG I sooooo enjoyed watching the energy and fun during this dance!

Not to mention the obvious closeness and sweetness of Jessica’s family during the father/daughter dance.  Yup.  I cried too.  I’m not ashamed….

When Jessica and Clarke were together, it was just them…and the tenderness they had for each other was so beautiful.

Thank you Jessica and Clarke for letting me share your wonderful day! Now go and kick some hockey butt in Toronto!!!!

Things We Love Today | Rochester NY Photographer

September 11, 2010

So……it’s that time again! That time that we here at Tammy Swales Photography share with you the lovely, quirky, and generally fun and fantastic things that are making us smile lately.  Bit of a diverse mix this time around. For starters…I’ve seen some crafty home decorating ideas, but seriously…curtains made out of old Kodachrome slides? WHAT?!?!  I want these.

One can never be too careful about their identity these days. That is why we should all have Secret Identity Eyeglasses. Clark Kent was actually spot on.

Jess has apparently been obsessed with this scarf for about a year now. And still hasn’t bought it. Which is silly. Because I can totally see her rockin’ a lobster.

She is also completely infatuated with Chuao Chocolatier’s Spicy Maya chocolate…dark chocolate with pasilla chili, cayenne pepper and cinnamon. Delectable goodness…

And lastly, I wanted to introduce you to a couple of photographers who have all-around fascinated me lately, Kevin Cooley and Chris McVeigh. If you have a second, take a look through their portfolios. SOOOO much color and such unique interesting takes on the world. And SO much fun! Love.

Seaside Sunrise Shot (say THAT ten times fast!) | Long Island NYC Wedding Photographer

September 8, 2010

Sooooo…..there are more stories about this wedding to come. I can’t tell them all now. But this image was SO fantastic, we had to tell its story right away!!!

It was the wee hours of the morning at Allegria Hotel and Spa on Long Island. A tired but very happy wedding party and I rolled out of bed to catch the early morning light. And we all got in the water. Yes…I stood in the ocean with all of my gear. With the tide coming in!! And…well….

It’s All in the Details: Julianne and Eric | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

In that long, hectic and seemingly endless stretch of time between when a couple starts planning their wedding and the actual wedding day, one of the things I love the most is to watch all the little details for my couple’s weddings come together and see how the day as a whole takes shape. And I LOVE when my brides get so excited about the things they are planning that they email me or call me, or show up for a meeting bursting at the seems to share their vision! I absolutely love to be involved!!! When my brides are passionate about something, I’m passionate about it as well, and it is all those affectionately chosen or crafted details that make each wedding as unique and as personal as each individual couple.

Every bride’s favorite deets vary. Sometimes they are invitations and placeholders, sometimes they are favors or flowers or the cake. For Julianne it was COLOR! (in particular this brilliant, happy color green. I say “happy” because it’s virtually impossible to look at without smiling)…and her accessories.

Everything she wore that day, from her dress…

Tammified01 512x768 custom Its All in the Details: Julianne and Eric | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

…to her shoes…

Tammified02 Its All in the Details: Julianne and Eric | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

…to her bracelet….

Tammified03 Its All in the Details: Julianne and Eric | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

…every piece was carefully and lovingly chosen, to express herself and her and Eric’s intimate and fun relationship (she was so excited about them that she sent me color samples and a link to photos of the bracelet way before the wedding!) and the final result was a wedding day that was elegant and very playful at the same time!

Tammified26 Its All in the Details: Julianne and Eric | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

Just like Julianne and Eric!!!

Tammified25 Its All in the Details: Julianne and Eric | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

Tammified31 Its All in the Details: Julianne and Eric | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

Personal details are by no means limited to decorations or dress.

When Julianne and I met to go over her schedule she told me about Eric’s famous Michael Jackson impression/dance. By the way her face lit up I could tell that this was something about her fiance (husband!) that she cherished, which speaks to that same sense of playfulness she was creating with their accessories. Sure enough, when MJ started playing during the reception, Eric couldn’t resist the urge to get out on the dance floor! And let me tell you, this groom has got some MOVES!

Tammified38 Its All in the Details: Julianne and Eric | Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

So whether it’s shoes or dance moves, don’t be afraid to get excited about your details! If you need someone to bounce ideas of off, give me a call and I’ll get fired up right along with you!!! And…most importantly…never ever be afraid to play.

Do you think headshots make a difference? | Rochester NY Headshot Photographer

September 3, 2010

And I mean this as a serious question.  Do you think they are important?

I can tell you what I think — and my opinion is based not on the fact that taking these photographs are part of what I do for a living — but more of a life-long observation about how our society functions.

(yeah.  I’m about to go serious.  brace yourselves!  ::grin::)

So.  Many of us have had the experience of being thin and beautiful and then maybe not so much.  Have you noticed how differently you are treated simply based on appearances?  Or…what if you leave the house looking ratty vs. all amazing and cute.  Difference?

And yeah.  I can also see that looking good impacts your attitude and the way you carry yourself and all that inner beauty stuff.  But I am simply observing that appearances have impact.  On everyone.

So do I think headshots are important?  Yup.  With the economy being what it is, with people competing for jobs in ever greater numbers…with judgment about your business being made in an instant on the internet…have you looked at your bounce rate lately?  That tells you something.  Important.

Images are CRITICAL.  CRITICAL.

They tell someone a lot about you in a glance…things like…do you look approachable?  likeable?  happy?  intelligent?

Are the images professional (nods to self ::grin::)?  And within that word professional there are many many different levels.  If you are presenting yourself to the world…why in heaven’s name would you put up blah images?  What does that say to others about how you view yourself?

And I am not by any stretch giving you a Tammy Swales “hire me” plug.  All I’m doing is expressing what I think about the importance of images.  We are a visual society.  We’re impatient.  We don’t wait or ponder or get wishy washy much anymore.  We’re decisive and make snap decisions.

Trust me.  If an interviewer or recruiter or Broadway show director is faced with a pile of 500 resumes with images attached…do you think they’re going to read every single one?  Nope.  Betcha that they flip through the images first.  Is it right?  Nope.  Is it real?  Yup.

A good photographer, an experienced photographer both understands this dynamic — but works with the client to make sure they are being presented in the best possible … um if you’ll pardon the pun… light.  Your personality and self are what’s important.  Getting that into a photograph is a major MAJOR skill.  It’s not the camera people.  Trust me.

So I ask you…how do you want the world to see yourself?!

Yes images ARE critical. Great post.

I totally agree with you,… although I would say I’m certainly a bit biased being a photographer and all.
